Dla udanej uprawy hakonechloi 'Albostriata' absolutely key is the choice of the correct location. This grass loves partial shade to shade; in direct noon sun, its beautifully variegated leaves could burn and turn brown, while in deep shade, the coloring might be less pronounced. An ideal place is the undergrowth beneath taller trees or the shady side of a house, where its ability to brighten darker corners stands out. The soil should be humous, loamy, and constantly slightly moist, but never waterlogged. Heavy clay soils must be lightened by adding sand and compost before planting, so the roots can breathe and not rot, which is fatal for this plant, especially in winter.
Plant the seedlings so that the top part of the root ball is level with the surrounding terrain. If you plan mass planting, keep a spacing of 40–50 cm (approximately 5–7 plants per m2), so that individual clumps have enough space for their cascading growth. After planting, water the plants thoroughly and ensure regular watering in the first year so the soil never completely dries out. Hakonechloa roots relatively shallowly, so it is advisable to mulch the area around the plant with bark or wood chips, which helps retain necessary moisture at the roots and limits weed growth.
Care throughout the year is very easy for this grass because it does not suffer from any diseases or pests. The most important task is the spring cut. Do not cut the leaves in autumn – the damp weather will color them in beautiful bronze to golden shades, and the dry leaves also protect the center of the plant (the heart) from frost and excessive moisture. Only in spring (March/April), when strong frosts have passed, cut the whole clump low above the ground, about 5 cm above the surface. Then you can fertilize the plant with high-quality organic fertilizer or compost to support vigorous new growth.
Hakonechloa 'Albostriata' is also an excellent choice for growing in pots and window boxes. Thanks to its cascading habit, it beautifully overflows the edges of the pot and softens the lines of a terrace or balcony. However, when growing in a pot, it is necessary to provide perfect drainage (a layer of gravel or expanded clay at the bottom) and regular watering, because the substrate in a pot dries out faster than in open ground. For winter, we recommend wrapping the pot with jute or polystyrene and placing it in a sheltered location, so the root ball does not freeze, as the plant is more sensitive to frost in a pot than in a flowerbed.
